High school chemistry students that compete in the USNCO by taking the U. S. National Chemistry Olympiad examination are eligible to be selected as members of the United States team for the International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO). Every year since 1984 the U.S. has sent a team of four students to compete with teams from approximately fifty countries in the IChO. The students participate in both theoretical and laboratory examinations over several days. Gold, silver, and bronze medals are awarded to the best performers and the IChO provides students the opportunity to interact with their peers from other countries.

This year the international event will be held in Washington, D.C. July 21-30, 2012.

The New York Section of the American Chemical Society will be able to provide a copy of the Merck Index to each school which registers students to participate in the 2012 Chemistry Olympiad. However, the Section has no funds to cover shipping. See below for more details.
