The mission of the Environmental Chemistry Committee is to orient and educate the public about current environmental issues.
Annual seminars (named the Dr. Frances Sterrett Symposium in honor of the founder of the group) usually are scheduled in May at Hofstra University,
and include topics that are relevant to current events. The seminars also have a poster session for students.

The thirteenth annual Frances S. Sterrett Environmental Chemistry Symposium will be held at Hofstra University on Thursday, May 20, 2010.
The emphasis of this year's symposium will be "Sustaining the Green Revolution".
The keynote speaker will be Kate Murray, Supervisor of the Town of Hempstead,
who will present information on the status and progress of the recycling programs in the Town of Hempstead.
The three other speakers in this year's symposium are Mr. Frank Mruk, NYIT School of Architecture and Design, speaking on
"Strategies Redefined: The Evolution of the Green Case Study",
Dr. Denyce K. Wicht, Suffolk University, speaking on "Increasing Undergraduate Awareness of Green Chemistry Through Research" and
Dr. Patrick Looney, Brookhaven National Laboratory, speaking on "Meeting the Challenge of Reducing Green House Gas Emissions in New York State".
This symposium is sponsored by the American Chemical Society,
the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the Ideas Institute of Hofstra University and Hofstra University.
The registration fee, which includes lunch, is $25 for members of the ACS or AIChE, $35 for nonmembers and $17 for students.
Efforts are underway to determine eligibility of the symposium for professional development credits for engineers and educators.
