ACTIVITY 4 ***
2006 SECTION-WIDE CONFERENCE AND PLANNING MEETING
The Annual New York Section’s Section-wide Conference and General Planning Meeting was be held on Saturday, January 21, 2006 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Pace University in Pleasantville, NY. Approximately 100 members and invited students from local colleges and universities attended the meeting. The program, entitled “Preparing the Next Generation of Chemists: A Partnership Between Academia and Industry”, was designed to bring together two important groups of members in our section: undergraduate students and chemists working in industry. The invited speakers included Ted Deisenroth, Ph.D. from CIBA Specialty Chemicals, Mark J. Mulvihill, Ph.D. from OSI Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Mr. David Sherman, and Mr. Jack Cordova, Ph.D both from Pepsi-Cola. The speakers gave an overview of their companies to the membership and invited students and provided details about internship opportunities for students at their companies. A Salute to Excellence Award was given to the companies our speakers represented in recognition of their efforts to create opportunities for young chemists. In addition to the main program a Service Plaque and Pin was presented to the 2005 NY Section Chair , James W. Canary, Ph.D. and the New York Section Outstanding Service Award for 2005 was presented to David Rahni, Ph.D., for his numerous contributions to the section. Our outgoing Treasurer, Mr. Frank Romano, also received a Service Plaque for his outstanding management of the New York Section’s finances. Mrs. Nadia Makar spoke to the membership about Project Seed and several excellent student research posters were on display during the breakfast and coffee break and Mr. David Sherman delivered an inspirational presentation on the 1st Annual NCW Celebration at the New York Hall of Science.
The meeting ended with the New York Section Committee Planning Sessions for, Educational Activities (Chair: S. Mary L. Maier), Member Affairs (Chair: Ralph Stephani), Program Review (Chair: Anne T. O’Brien), Public Affairs (Chair: Frank R. Romano), and MARM Planning. Following the meeting the recipient of the Outstanding Service Award, David Rahni, was treated to lunch by the members at a local Italian Restaurant.
