PROJECT SEED

The New York Section sponsored very successful SEED I and SEED II programs in 2006. Over 70 students participated in Project SEED from the NY section representing more than one third the total number of participants from the entire nation. The magnitude and impact of this program is absolutely incredible. This year, students did research at 25 institutions: NYU, St. John's University, Columbia University, Hunter College, City University of New York, Fordham University, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Stevens Institute of Technology, New Jersey Medical and Dental School, The Meadowlands Environmental Institute, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Rutgers University in Newark, Seton Hall University, Rutgers University College of Engineering, the CAIP Center, COOK College, Jersey City Medical Center, Rutgers College of Pharmacy, the Medical Devices Concept Laboratories, the Ceramic Center, Robert Wood Johnson Hospital and Hackensack Hospital.

Two students were invited to present papers in San Francisco at the National Meeting of ACS and they were the only students who participated in SCI MIX at the meeting. Project SEED students earned top awards in several competitions including the Seton Hall Science Competition, sixth annual Schering-Plough Research Competition, and the AMTNJ Postyer Competition. A SEED student placed first in the Rutgers Junior Science Symposium and represented the state at the national symposium sponsored by the AAAS in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Students in project seed continue to receive college scholarships to continue their scientific education. Eight students from the NY section won the SEED scholarship and one was named an ACS scholar. These students who are often the first in their families to attend college have gone on to Rutgers University, Long Island University, Carnie Mellon, Stevens Institute of Technology, New Jersey Institute of Technology and the University of Florida. The Section acknowledges the dedication of our Project Seed Coordinator Ms. Nadia Makar who can be credited with building this exceptional program and inspiring so many young people to pursue scientific careers.
