LOCAL SECTION GOALS AND CHAIR'S GOALS

2006 GOALS ASSESSMENT AND 2007 GOALS

Jill Rehmann, 2006 New York Section Chair and Joan Laredo-Liddell, 2007 New York Section Chair

2006 LOCAL SECTION GOALS AND ASSESSMENT

1. To make the section’s activities more relevant to younger members and undergraduate and graduate chemistry students.

This year we saw a large increase in the number of younger chemists who participated in New York Section programs. The NCW volunteers were primarily students from local colleges and the Undergraduate Research
Symposium was the largest ever with 136 student presenters over 280 attendees. We have used these and other events as opportunities for outreach and this has influenced the growth of our many programs.

2. To strengthen the ties to the businesses in our area.

Several activities served to achieve this section goal. We reached out to industry at the Section-Wide Conference, NCW, and the mostly chemical marketing professions at the Historical Landmark celebration at the Chemists’ Club.
The reactivation of the Rockland Subsection has been untaken by an industrial chemist and industrial participation at the Nichols Symposium was higher than in recent years.

3. To increase publicity of section activities.

Significant progress was made in the publicity area. The section established an active Publicity Committee that has placed notices of meeting in local newspapers and enhanced the use of the website to publicize our events.
Advertising for National Chemistry Week our increased substantially as described below.

2006 CHAIR'S GOALS AND ASSESSMENT

1. Increase student and industrial participation in the National Chemistry Week event at the New York Hall of Science. (Section goals #1 and #2)

We were highly successful in achieving this goal. The total number of volunteers increased to over 172, about 100 more than last year, and the number of demonstrations increased by about 25%. Many companies were asked to
participate and two industrial participants joint the NCW celebration.

2. Increase student awareness of career opportunities for chemists in the private sector. (Section goals #1 and #2)

Efforts in this area must continue but great progress was made this year. All of the Student Affiliates were invited to the Section-Wide Conference in January where the program focused on summer internships available at local
companies. The Undergraduate Research Symposium also featured representatives from industry who were available to meet students and discuss job opportunities.

3. Pursue Historical Chemical Landmark. (Section goal #2)

This was a great year for the History Committee. Working with the Chemists’ Club, the original location, which has been the focal point of collegiality among chemists in the New York Are for almost 100 years, was designated a
Historical Landmark of the New York Section. The ceremony took place at the holiday gathering of the Chemists’ Club in December (see top ten). In addition the committee is working with IBM in Westchester County to develop a
proposal for a National Chemical Landmark.

4. Increase awareness of section programs for high school students. (section goals #1 and #3)

This was a terrific year for Chemagination. The number of high schools participating more than doubled. Over 2000 students from the Hudson-Bergen and Westchester Subsections participated in NCW events. The Olympiad was
also highly successful with over 900 students participating and Project Seed continues to grow. All of our Subsections reached out to high schools in the area and provided certificates to outstanding chemistry students. Our High
School Teachers Topical Group is a vehicle for providing information about these many valuable programs.

5. Energize the community relations and publicity committee. (Section Goal #3)

Progress was made on this goal in our outreach and advertising for National Chemistry Week at the Hall of Science. The event was advertised on radio, and in local paper. Work in this area continues.

2007 LOCAL SECTION GOALS

1. To increase the number of relevant activities sponsored by Subsections and Topical Groups

2. To continue working with other scientific organizations

3. To expand our public outreach activities

2007 CHAIR’S GOALS

1. To revitalize the Rockland Subsection

2. To continue expanding National Chemistry Week activities and participation

3. To present programs that will be of interest not only to the chemist but also the public

4. To make local politicians aware of the services and activities of NY-ACS

5. To contact and involve the new small chemical industries in the New York area in the activities of the Section
