NATIONAL CHEMISTRY WEEK 2006

New York Hall of Science - October 28, 2006

The New York Section exploded this year with its Section presentation for National Chemistry Week.

Last year, for the first time, we held NCW at the New York Hall of Science. It was such a success that the Section applied for a grant to make this year’s better. We did not get the grant but that did not stop us.

The coordinator for this presentation is David Sherman of Pepsi-Cola. He was pleased with the results of 2005. By November 2005, he was working to make 2006 even better.

We went from using the first level of the NY Hall of Science in 2005 to using the Great Hall in 2006. Now the challenge was to fill it. The word spread and other schools wanted to be a part of NCW for the section.

As New York Section Chair, I was assigned the ACS Welcome Table and direct edpeople upstairs to the Great Hall. As the volunteers arrived, the Hall started to fill up. Who was there?

Over 900 people walked through the Great Hall.

All tables were decorated with the red, white and blue NCW balloons.

Each young person who completed the Evaluation received a jumping frog or slinky.

All volunteers received a NCW Gator Clip.

Every school or industry received an Avogadro Mole.

The New York Section has an active Student Affiliate. E-mails were sent to all inviting them to participate in NCW.

David Sherman was able to get industries to participate. Perhaps next year that number will increase.

I would like to see more high schools involved. Again, perhaps next year.

David Sherman is already working on 2007.

Yes, we were invited back to the New York Hall of Science.

The Hall of Science and New York Section took out radio time and an eye catching advertisement in the New York Daily News.

New York Mayor Bloomberg was invited to attend NCW, but was unable to attend.
