Chemical Marketing & Economics Group
Report for 2007

Statement of Activities:  The CM&E Group is a topical group of the New York Section of the American Chemical Society.  The mission of the Group is to inform members and guests of economic and marketing issues of timely interest to the chemical and pharmaceutical industries.  To this end, the Group has monthly luncheon meetings that take place September through June on the first Thursday of each month. At these meetings an invited speaker from industry, the consulting profession or academia makes a presentation, usually for 45 minutes, followed by a question and answer period. Luncheon and the presentation are preceded by an informal social hour for networking and renewing and/or maintaining professional contacts. The luncheon meetings are held at The Chemists’ Club (40 W. 45th St. in New York City). A plaque acknowledging the contributions of the speaker is presented at each meeting.

Other Activities:  The CM&E Group co-sponsored with the New York Chapter of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and the Bronx County Chapter of the New York State Society of Professional Engineers a full day seminar on “Reducing CO2 Emissions:  Short-Term and Long-Term Strategies”.  The meeting was held at the Chemists’ Club and was very well attended.  Speakers from industry, academia, government and consultancies made presentations.  Six organizations provided funding as sponsors in addition to the fee charged for registration and luncheon.  Planning is already underway for a conference on “Water: The Next  ‘Oil’” to be held either in late November or early December 2008.

Finances: The Group charges dues annually.  For the 2007-2008 fiscal year
these are $20 for an ACS member and $50 for a person not  affiliated with the ACS. The luncheon fee is $40 for members and $55 for guests. Attendance at the luncheon meetings averaged slightly in excess of 30 persons during the year just ended. The meal cost charged by the Chemists’ Club has been negotiated and is now set, with a review scheduled for June 2008. The Group also realizes income from the rental of a projector purchased  three years ago; this is used monthly by the Chemical Analysts of New York, a group of security analysts. Rental charge is $100 for each use (monthly).  Revenues for calendar 2007 were $19,790 and expenses $15,237.  Guest fees, dues and the projector rental enable the Group to operate with a positive cash flow. This amounted to $4,553 for calendar 2007.  At the end of December 2007 the Group had $27,496 in cash on hand  (bank deposits plus money market fund).

Membership: At the year-end (December 2007) membership stood at 99.  Of these, 38 are current on their dues.

Officers and Board Members:    Board usually meets monthly.

Outlook:  The program for January - March has been set with invitations out for speakers for the April-June meetings.
